U.S. airlines have called on the the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to extend a waiver that allowed them to cut back on service.
As thousands of flight disruptions on Monday due to severe storms spanned across the East Coast, U.S. airlines have called on the the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to extend a waiver that allowed them to cut back on service.
More than 8,900 flights were delayed within, into, or out of the United States on Monday and another 1,768 were canceled, according to flight tracker FlightAware, as the storms slammed the East Coast from Tennessee all the way up to New York. Most disruptions were centered around the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (known as the busiest airport in the world), which saw more than 590 outbound flight delays, or about 48 percent of its entire schedule, along with more than 500 inbound delays, amounting to about 41 percent of the schedule.
Delta Air Lines, whose hub is based in Atlanta, saw the most delays of any carrier with more than 1,300 in addition to more than 440 cancellations.
As a result of the severe storms, at least two people died and more than 1.1 million homes and businesses lost power, the Associated Press reported.

Active volcanoes like Mount Vesuvius and Mauna Loa have long dominated the news cycle, but as of July 10, there’s a new volcano in town. And this one — deemed a “baby volcano” — has already put on quite a show. The eruption, which started near Litli-Hrútur, a small peak between the cities of Reykjavik and Keflavik in Iceland, has finally slowed.
“It is still too early to declare that the eruption at Litli-Hrútur is over, though it appears evident that a new phase of the eruptive activity in the Reykjanes peninsula has started. It is premature to anticipate if the seismic activity will increase again and a new eruption will begin in the future, or not. Only time will tell,” reported the Icelandic Meteorological Office on Aug. 8.
From packing cubes to cable organizers, these must-haves take the stress out of packing.
Flight attendants always seem poised and relaxed, even during rough air that has the rest of us holding onto our armrests. But the reality is they’re not superheroes. They’re human. This means that they, too, have to deal with packing and trying to keep their carry-ons organized despite the chaos that surrounds them.

Travelers can either enter the contest for free or be automatically entered when purchasing a Air Tahiti Nui flight.
Travelers now have the chance to win enough airline miles to last for many trips to come.
Air Tahiti Nui’s “Share The Love” contest will give away a total of 1,000,000 airline miles from the loyalty program in increments of 25,000 miles each to winning travelers.
As for the ‘sharing’ component of the contest, each winner who gets the prize of 25,000 miles, can give 25,000 to a person of their choice. The original winner also receives a private helicopter flight courtesy of Tahiti Nui Helicopters.
The contest comprises of two rounds. Travelers can either enter the contest for free on the airline’s website or be automatically entered when purchasing a Air Tahiti Nui flight — by Sept. 30 of this year — for travel between now and Sept. 30, 2024. Entries are limited to one per person.
People who submit entries for the contest during the month of August will be entered into the Sept. 6, drawing and hopeful winners who enter in the month of September, the drawing will take place on Oct. 4. If a person does not win in the September drawing, they will automatically be entered into the October drawing, according to the contest’s rules.
The contest was originally announced as a celebration of the airline’s 25th anniversary earlier this year.
Air Tahiti Nui operates flights to Tahiti, French Polynesia, France, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.
Within the United States, the airline operates in Los Angeles and Seattle, and has partnerships with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines to connect to additional destinations.
Even though it seems like the summer travel season is flying by, those still looking to book a European getaway have some cheap options for a last-minute trip, according to a new report.
Data from Going.com shared with explore journey this week, shows that some of the cheapest airfares are in beloved Spanish and Italian cities — however Paris, France takes the No. 1 spot with the lowest price tag.
The findings took into account not just the price of flights, but also the volume of tickets being sold at that price, in an effort to represent the types of deals actually available for travelers to book.
Noticeably absent from the list is London, but it shouldn’t be surprising to frequent flyers as London’s Heathrow Airport has been cited as being the highest taxes & departure fees in the world, according to Reuters.
“Deals to some cities in Europe are simply more prevalent than deals to others, and there are a number of factors that impact fares and frequency of deals — including the number of airports in the city, the number of airlines serving those airports, and the amount of competition on various routes to and from that city,” staff at Going.com shared.
Beyond the data, travelers should also consider low-cost carriers when looking for a deal. For example, Travel + Leisure spotted one-way fares from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG) for only $181 in economy on Norse Atlantic Airways. The report didn’t factor these types of flights into their data, but they can be a helpful tool for travelers on a budget.
The National Park Service closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area as bears have been seen foraging for food.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has closed a park road due to bear activity during a time when the animals are foraging for food.
The National Park Service (NPS) closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area over the weekend, noting some of the park’s bears have “become habituated to humans and vehicles,” according to the NPS. The closure comes at a “critical time of year” for the bears since primary food sources like berries and acorns are not in season.
The closure occurred after a visitor in a vehicle suffered minor scratches after an encounter with a bear in the area.
“By closing Rich Mountain Road, we are protecting people and bears,” Cassius Cash, the park’s superintendent, said in a statement. “When people intentionally attract bears with human food or pet food it can lead to a dangerous situation for visitors, local communities, and the bears.”

The NPS said it was easy for bears to become food-conditioned over time when park goers throw food out of their vehicles toward the animals or leave food on the ground. These food-conditioned bears may then become aggressive and approach vehicles and people.
Seeing animals is one of the highlights of a visit to many national parks, but the NPS reminded travelers to keep their distance. Park visitors should always remain at least 150 feet away from bears and “never intentionally approach, feed, or leave food or trash out” for them.
This isn’t the first time Great Smoky Mountains National Park has closed due to bear activity. Last year, the park closed several trails in the fall so black bears could feed in the area in preparation for hibernation.

Breeze Airways is looking ahead to colder weather with one-way fall and winter flights starting at just $39.

While summer vacations may still be underway, travelers planning for a Labor Day Weekend end of the season may want to take new data into account.
The holiday weekend, which traditionally marks the end of the summer travel season, will see travelers explore popular travel hotspots both in the United States and around the world. Friday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 4 will be the busiest days for airport traffic as flyers jet to and from their destinations around the world, according to new data from Chase Travel shared with Travel + Leisure this week.
When it comes to popular domestic destinations, Chase found that travelers were mostly looking to big cities including:
1.New York, New York 2.San Francisco, California 3.Los Angeles, California 4.Seattle, Washington 5.Chicago, Illinois 6.Boston, Massachusetts 7.Denver, Colorado 8.Washington, DC 9.Las Vegas, Nevada 10.San Diego, California
While international destinations spanning from Europe to Asia included:
1.London, United Kingdom 2.Rome, Italy 3.Tokyo, Japan 4.Paris, France 5.Athens, Greece 6.Cancun, Mexico 7.Calgary, Canada 8.Seoul, South Korea 9.Barcelona, Spain 10.Dublin, Ireland
While many of the cities listed in the rankings are already popular destinations, the data also provides insights on which cities have surged in popularity from last year based on the rise in bookings. For example, Houston, Spokane, and Kansas City are some of the top domestic rising destinations, where Tokyo, Geneva, and Montreal are some of the top rising international destinations.
These predictions also align with data from the TSA in 2022, that reveals the agency screened 8.7 million passengers over Labor Day Weekend, and the Friday of the weekend was the busiest with 2.4
The best resort in California, as voted on by Travel + Leisure readers, is San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito.

At just 9.2 square miles and with fewer than 10,000 residents, Montecito, California, could easily fly under the radar, remaining undetected from the outside world. For the most part, it’s remained a quiet, A-list-filled enclave. Truly, you’d be hard-pressed to find a home here you can score without being a daytime talk show host. But, there is at least one way you can visit — by booking a stay at San Ysidro Ranch, the best resort in California, according to Travel + Leisure 2022 World’s Best Awards.
Located just 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, the Ranch unfolds right from its winding, tree-lined driveway that puts you in the right mood for a solitude-filled escape

At the entrance, guests walk up the cobblestoned steps to see the quaint-looking resort for the first time, including its stunning landscaping with century-old olive trees, sycamores, and eucalyptus. Though we say “quaint looking,” the property itself is far from small, encompassing some 550 acres of land along the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains.
Between the foliage sits the Ranch’s 38 intimate bungalow-style cottages, which have been frequented by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Justin Bieber, along with our own American royalty, John and Jacqueline Kennedy. And that’s no surprise considering the Ranch’s tagline is: “Where the seen come to be unseen.”
Inside their cottage doors, guests will find unique décor, including antique goodies curated throughout the years, while outside, they’ll find outdoor showers, plunge pools, and fire pits to make it all feel like a home away from home.

But, unlike home, you aren’t required to lift a finger to do anything, including cooking, thanks to the Ranch’s two restaurants: Stonehouse and Plow & Angel. There’s also always something to sip on here, thanks to Stonehouse’s 12,000-bottle cellar offering sought-after (and well-aged) California wines.
There’s plenty to see and do around the Montecito area. However, if guests choose, they really never have to leave the Ranch as it features with a heated swimming pool, a new bar, the Salon & Spa at San Ysidro Ranch, which comes with a new outdoor patio for pampering in the fresh air, and for an additional fee, guests can reserve a golf experience at the new Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at the exclusive members-only Montecito Club.

For those who are disinterested in planning any part of their trip themself, the Ranch offers a few over-the-top experiential packages, including its new California Wine Country package made for oenophiles. The experience, which starts at $15,500 for two guests for four nights, includes a one-day bike rental and gourmet picnic basket on a self-guided tour of the best tasting rooms in town, a private cottage wine tasting with sommelier Tristan Pitre, a private wine tasting trip to the Santa Ynez Valley, a four-course dinner at Stonehouse, and a Vinatherapy Wine Wrap at the Salon & Spa.
Guests can also upgrade their stay by booking either the two-bedroom Kennedy Cottage, where John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned or at the Ranch’s owner Ty Warner’s 6,000-square-foot signature villa, which comes with its own private swimming pool. For a party of two, pricing for three nights starts at $40,000 for the Kennedy Cottage or $50,000 for Warner Cottage. Both stays come with all-inclusive dining and one customized five-course dinner for two, an exclusive Balvenie scotch tasting for two, a daily activity like a sunset sail or private yoga, and a day of rejuvenation at the Salon & Spa
