LONDON, March 30 (Reuters) – London is no longer the clear leader among global financial centres after New York rose from second place to level peg with the British capital as more companies list in the United States, the City of London Corporation’s said on Thursday.
The City, which administers London’s financial district, said in its annual survey that benchmarks on the performance of global financial centres gave London an overall competitiveness score of 60, up from 59 in 2022, but New York increased its score to 60.
The City said Britain continues to build on its long-standing strengths as the world’s largest centre for international debt issuance, commercial (re)insurance, and foreign exchange trading, and the second largest asset management centre.
But the number of international company listings in London is falling, and few global firms are choosing to list there, the City said
Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority flagged proposed changes on Wednesday to streamline listing rules.
Finance sector officials in Britain have called for faster reforms of financial rules to bolster the City’s competitiveness after Brexit pitted London against EU centres such as Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt.
New York overtook London in 2018 to become the top global financial centre in the separate Z/Yen survey.
The City is due in the third quarter to set out recommendations for a long-term blueprint to “kickstart” London’s role as a post-Brexit global financial centre by 2030.
“The UK remains one of the most open and global financial centres with better access to international markets than the US, France, or Japan. But our competitive advantage is at risk,” said Chris Hayward, policy chairman at the City of London Corporation.

How to reheat steak in the oven
A great way to maintain a juicy steak is reheat it slowly in the oven first and then finish on the stovetop. Preheat your oven to 275° and place a wire cooling rack over a large baking sheet. Cooking your steak on a cooling rack allows the hot air to circulate around the steak, giving you more evenly heated meat.
Place your steak on top of the cooling rack and warm in the oven until the internal temperature reaches 110°. This will take about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the thickness of your steak.

The human brain is remarkably capable of adapting and manipulating tools—but manipulating entire robot limbs could be another story. Scientists from Cambridge University are studying how the brain interprets an extra robo-appendage and how it affects other motor functions. Their study of 600 people showed that humans of all ages are remarkably capable at adapting to a “third thumb.”
One of Homo sapiens’ most remarkable traits is our ability to use tools. Scientists have studied how the brain considers tools in relation to our hands, and without any need for exaggeration, this incredible mind trick is what completely transformed both our species and the planet.
Now, roboticists and engineers are asking another question: does that mental ability extend into the cybernetic realm? If we were to strap on an extra pair of fingers or robot arms, whether to help construction workers at build sites or to simply help around the house, can our brains adapt to these robo-appendages? And could they work as well as their biological counterparts?
Tamar Makin and Dani Clode, scientists from at the MRC cognition and brain unit at Cambridge University, will be addressing that question this week at the the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in a presentation excellently titled “Homo cyberneticus: motor augmentation for the future body.”
With direct brain machine interfaces, patients are already able to control bionic arms by the power of their thought, bypassing an injured spinal cord or a missing limb,” the description reads. “Now, beyond restoration of lost function, there is a growing interest in exploiting similar technologies for human motor augmentation.”
So, what exactly are these robots, and how do they work? For several years, Clode has designed and refined a “third thumb” that can be attached at the wrist and controlled by your toes. This extra thumb is connected to two motors located on the wrist that are then powered by a battery and a micro-controller on the arm. The system then connects wirelessly to micro-controllers around the ankle and pressure sensors located under the big toes. Pressing down on these sensors activates the thumb.
This cybernetic augmentation isn’t necessarily something the team hopes to market as a stand-alone product to tech companies like Apple (where it would probably be unimaginatively named “Apple Thumb”). Rather, they’d present it as a platform to explore how the brain navigates cybernetic augmentation along with control signals from other parts of the body.
“I got a […] grant in order to explore what happens to the human brain when we start controlling a body part we’ve never had before,” Makin said in an interview with The Royal Society last year. “For example, if you use your toes in order to control a third thumb … is your toe going to become more like a hand? When you’re walking home are you going to be a bit more clumsy?”
Makin’s team has leveraged fMRI technology to measure brain activity as it adapts to this additional robotic appendage and has discovered that the human brain is remarkably adaptable to extra fingers and limbs. Makin tells The Guardian that out of 600 people tested between the ages of three and 97, 98 percent could effectively use the thumb within a minute.
Clode’s third thumb is far from the only robot appendage out there. Engineers in Japan have designed a backpack-style robot that supplies the wearer with extra human arms and MIT also designed a pair of shoulder-mounted robotic arms back in 2014, to name only a few.
Further investigations into how the human brain interprets these extra limbs will only improve their design in the years to come—perhaps one day truly giving rise to the reign of Homo cyberneticus.
