“What we’re saying now is travel should not be to West Maui. But the other parts of Maui are safe,” Gov. Josh Green said during a press conference this week.
As Hawai’i continues to rebuild from the devastating and deadly wildfires that swept through the western region of Maui, the state’s leadership is encouraging travel to the other islands and even parts of Maui that were not affected by the wildfires.
In a news conference this week, Hawaii’s Gov. Josh Green and its tourism board advised travelers that they’re still welcome to visit the other islands of Hawaii.
“Like we saw in the pandemic, decisions we made can affect everyone across the islands. So what we’re saying now is travel should not be to West Maui.
But the other parts of Maui are safe,” Green said at the press event.

Japan is renowned for its delicate cherry blossoms and mesmerizing bamboo forests, but that’s only the beginning of the country’s charms. From the snowy wilderness of Hokkaido to the tropical forests of Okinawa, Japan has enough natural wonders to keep you in awe. Come explore some of the most stunning places across the country’s 47 prefectures.
1. Takachiho Gorge, Miyazaki, Kyushu
The Gokase River has carved a deep slash through volcanic rock, creating an undulating surface resembling dragon scales climbing toward the sky. Visitors can rent a rowboat to paddle down the river and along the Minainotaki, a waterfall plunging down the sheer cliffs into the river.
2. Iya Valley, Tokushima, Shikoku
The remote and isolated Iya Valley was an escape for the retreating Heike samurai clan. The valley is characterized by plunging gorges, verdant mountains with terraced farms, centuries-old thatched-roof farmhouses, and suspended woven vine bridges swaying precariously over rushing rivers.
3. Yakushima, Kagoshima, Kyushu
The green island of Yakushima, off the southern tip of Kyushu’s Kagoshima Prefecture, is home to native deer and monkeys, as well as ancient cedars. It also happens to be the stomping ground for migrating turtles and dolphins. One-fifth of the island is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the heady mix of subtropical forest, hot springs, and dozens of peaks more than 3,000 feet served as major inspiration for the Studio Ghibli animators of “Princess Mononoke.”
4. Tottori Sand Dunes, Tottori
The enormous sand dunes on the Tottori coast have an otherworldly quality. The surreal scenery is also the inspiration for Kōbō Abe’s 1962 novel (and later film) “The Woman in the Dunes.”
5. Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido
At the very top of Hokkaido lies Shiretoko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sprawling more than 70,000 hectares. It’s the habitat for one of the densest populations of brown bears in the world, and is frequented by whales, porpoises, and sea birds among the drift ice in the Sea of Okhotsk.
6. Goshikinuma, Fukushima
The back side of Mount Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture is home to Goshikinuma, which means “five-colored ponds” and refers to a collection of water bodies that shift their brilliant hues to blues, greens, and reds based on the time of day, season, and weather. The pond trail winds through the forest and can be hiked or snowshoed, depending on the time of year.
7. Ogasawara Islands, Tokyo
It may be part of Tokyo, but it’s more than 620 miles away, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Ogasawara Islands, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, are only accessible via a ferry that departs from Tokyo and takes 24 hours to reach Chichijima, the largest of the islands. Along with Hahajima, only two islands in the archipelago are inhabited. They’re also home to sperm whales, dolphins, crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and even a submerged shipwreck for snorkel exploration.
8. Gokayama, Toyama
Gokayama and the neighboring area of Shirakawa-go are UNESCO World Heritage Sites home to rustic farm villages that maintain the structures and visage from centuries past. The villages are set in green valleys surrounded by towering, snowy mountains dotted with farmhouses featuring steeply pitched, traditional thatched roofs that insulate the homes against the cold and keep snow from piling up. Try a farm stay with firewood heat, tasty country food, and hot spring baths.
9. Iriomote Island, Okinawa
Closer to Taiwan than mainland Japan, Iriomote Island is one of the country’s wildest and most remote places. Thickly forested, the jungle-like center gives way to mangroves and sparkling blue and white beaches at the edge. The island is also home to the Iriomote cat, a critically endangered wildcat thats only found here.
10. Mount Zaō, Yamagata
In January and February, a curious phenomenon takes over the ski resort at Mount Zaō. Aomori fir trees meet Siberian winds, and before long, the slopes become covered by juhyo, or “snow monsters” — an army of giant, shaggy beasts with long beards and stumpy arms, seemingly ready to shuffle forward in battle.
An expert deep-dives into how the Land of the Rising Sun has changed over the last three years.
After living in Tokyo as a student and young professional, I’ve made visiting Japan a priority at least once a year since, deep-diving new and interesting themes and destinations as the country continues to evolve both with and against the rising tide of globalization. I’ve written about everything from the secret world of “rotten girl” fan fiction manga to the far-flung village in Shikoku that’s become a cult attraction among Kengo Kuma architecture devotees; I’ve also authored three travel books about the country.
This time, I’ve been on a quest to discover everything that’s new and different now that Japan’s officially open for tourism once more. Here’s what I’ve found after a month of on-the-ground research:
Hotels want to be more than just a place to stay.
They want to be your tour guide. Born from the ashes of the pandemic, hotels are leaning harder into diversifying their offerings. In Japan, hotels are upping the ante to become not just the place you hang your hat, but the lens through which you capture the destination.
Leading that trend in the luxury section is Aman, which has established a reputation for embedding itself so deep within its locales that it feels endemic. Aman Tokyo was the first Aman to take the recipe for sprawling resorts into the heart of a city; a sanctuary incorporating natural materials, a floor plan pastiche of the traditional Japanese house, and incredible views of the imperial gardens with — on a clear day — Mount Fuji just behind. During the quiet of the pandemic, the brand dug even deeper, creating a circuit of bespoke tours for guests to the nearby Nihonbashi district, where they connect with artisans who have been perpetuating precise, generations-old traditions like kimono making and chopstick whittling.
At the in-house restaurant, Musashi by Aman, the eponymous chef Musashi takes diners on the most comprehensive culinary experience possible. Never mind the flight of sushi shopped from the market earlier in the day; on Sundays and Mondays, Musashi retreats to his mountain hideaway to grow rice, farm wasabi root, and spin his potters wheel into compelling ceramics — all of which then find their place on his dinner table.
The theme of intentionality continues at Aman Kyoto, which opened just as COVID-19 was ripping across Asia; a sanctuary on the outskirts of the city with a tucked-away garden in Mount Hidari’s forest, inspired by the ruins of Machu Picchu, but with distinct local flair. The perfect antidote to the touristic hustle of the country’s favorite temple town, the resort’s modus operandi is to encourage guests to completely slow down, whether that means soothing soaks in the geothermal onsen, riding bikes around the nearby temples (wondrous places of worship but with a fraction of the tourist traffic), or strolling through the property’s forest and sitting down in a quiet nook with a resident artist to paint the vivid sakura buds of spring or the deep red maples of koyo in the autumn.
A commute and a cubicle have been a reality for many workers for decades, but the notion that you have to stick to the same routine and strap yourself to a desk for eight (or more) hours day-after-day is becoming outdated. Today, work is more flexible than ever, with employees opting to clock-in from home, on the road — and in some cases, from a beach bungalow in Thailand.
Gallup’s 2017 State of the American Workplace report found that 51 percent of employees would switch jobs for flextime, and 37 percent would make the change for a job that allows them to work off-site at least part of the time. In short, people are looking for greater flexibility and autonomy — and it seems companies are listening.
LinkedIn’s 2019 Global Talent Trends Report notes there’s been a 78 percent increase in job posts mentioning “workplace flexibility” since 2016. Some companies are adding value by giving employees the freedom to work from anywhere, while others offer international travel opportunities as part of the job or positions in foreign countries.
“Since we spend 90,000 hours of our adult lives working, we should make our on-the-job time work for us,” Blair Decembrele, LinkedIn career expert, “When negotiating for a new position, more than half of millennials say their top priority is work schedule. If you’re part of the 53% who have never negotiated during the interview process, now is a great time to start asking for what you want.”
To get you started, the data team at LinkedIn pulled travel-friendly jobs — including remote gigs, jobs based abroad, and positions that include international travel — that are all available right now.
Theater Auditor, Cinemark
If you love film, this job based in Houston, Texas, may be the perfect fit. Not only will you be working in the movie industry — Cinemark has over 500 theatres in the U.S. and Latin America — but you’ll be traveling up to 50 percent of the time for work. Considering the job description notes that skills in Spanish or Portuguese is a plus, we’re guessing some Latin American travel may be included too.
Email Marketing Specialist, iFit
This job is perfect for fitness fanatics who have an eye for detail and improving processes. In this full-time, fully remote position — or you can work from the company’s office in Logan, Utah — you’ll be in charge of building and deploying email marketing communications, analyzing data segmentation, and running monthly reports.
Aftersales Business Manager, Ferrari
This job is based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, but the posting states that you must be able to travel frequently (over 50 percent of the time) — often to Ferrari dealers to administrative, technical services, and parts support. However, the job posting does mention some international travel… Italy, anyone?
Customer Service Representative, Nestlé
In this full-time, remote position, you’ll be working at the frontline of Nestlé Waters’ customer service. You’ll be responsible for solving product and service inquiries, billing questions, and other concerns. The only requirement of this remote position is that you’re able to work in a designated space that’s free from distractions.
Senior MW & WW Stylist, Urban Outfitters
In this London-based role, you’ll be part of Urban Outfitters’ in-house styling team, meaning you’ll help deliver and develop the company’s presentation of womenswear in Europe. Sounds dreamy, but it only gets better. From London, all of Europe is a short plane ride away.
Engineering Program Manager, Supply Chain Capital Projects, Starbucks
You can help make Starbucks’ supply chain even more efficient in this remote gig. As the Engineering program manager, you’ll be in charge of planning and executing programs that enhance the company’s manufacturing, productivity, and capacity.
Category Manager Jewelry Candles, Charmed Aroma
You’ll be based in beautiful Toronto for this job, but over the weekends, you’ll want to take full advantage by exploring all that Canada has to offer. At Charmed Aroma, a candle e-commerce company where you can find a $5,000 ring inside your candle, you’ll work as the category manager. Your job will be to come up with and implement the brand’s strategy in order to grow the company.
Channel Manager, Argyll Scott Omni
If you have experience in retail, you may be the perfect fit for this channel manager job based in Singapore. Not only will you be working in a modern-day Utopia, but you’ll be in charge of making sure the Omni way of doing business is done seamlessly across the Asia Pacific.
Retail and Planning Manager, Giorgio Armani
Fashion lovers need not look further. This retail job for Giorgio Armani is amazing all on its own — but the location in Sydney, Australia is the icing on the cake. In this role, you’ll be responsible for maximizing your retail location’s growth and development, while managing stock and product.
Want to work from home? Here are remote jobs hiring right now on LinkedIn.
For many of us, the ability to work remotely has changed the game. Cubicles have been replaced with cozy home offices (or poolside cabanas, if you’re lucky) and in lieu of that 20-minute commute, we get an extra 20 minutes in bed. In addition to changing where we work, it’s got us rethinking how we work and what we want out of a job.
It’s no wonder that LinkedIn reports that over a third of their members who are looking to switch industries are on the hunt for more flexible hours and a more flexible WFH policy. Because why should you spend the day chained to your desk when you could be clocking in early and hitting the trails over lunch, or working late so you can sleep in after a long weekend?
If the 9-to-5 grind has got you down, or you’re looking for more flexibility at work, give this roundup of remote jobs a peek. Each company has a different work culture and WFH policy, but each position is fully remote and accepting applications on LinkedIn right now.

Supply Chain Analyst, Pet Brand — Golden Hippo
The future is bright at Golden Hippo, an employee-owned company that has been recognized for its approach to leadership, marketing, and company culture. As the supply chain analyst, you’ll be the liaison between a pet brand and the Golden Hippo supply chain. Communication is a key part of the role, but it can be done from your cozy home office.
Account Coordinator — ResortPass
ResortPass turned under-utilized hotel amenities — pools, spas, gyms, and conference rooms — into a business, making it easy for people to pay to use a property’s amenities without booking an overnight stay. And since the company has a flexible remote work policy (in addition to generous time off and great health insurance) you can not only enjoy the remote-work lifestyle yourself, but can hire others seeking out the same flexibility.
Financial Analyst — Treez Inc
As the cannabis industry takes off, Treez remains the industry’s go-to for retail supply chain software and tech. Are you an interior designer with a penchant for all things royal?
Think you’ve got a knack for interior design? The Queen of England needs you.
In March, palace officials announced that Queen Elizabeth II will move out of Buckingham Palace, choosing instead to make Windsor Castle her primary residence. But that doesn’t mean she’s leaving Buckingham in disrepair.
Earlier this month, The Royal Household posted a job listing for a painter and decorator to join the staff. The full-time role would work in the palace to help add “decorative finishes, for people to appreciate for years to come.”
According to the job listing, if you want to apply, you should feel inspired to “deliver to the very highest standards” and have “pride in joining a team at the heart of a world famous institution.”
The person who joins the team will be expected to provide both internal and external redecoration services across various Royal residences and ensure that all “decorative works are completed to the highest level of finish.”
This includes working in several buildings across the estates, where the person will also carry out inspections and call into attention which rooms need further work, then overseeing said work to completion.
“Working in such uniquely historic environments means you’ll have the opportunity to expand your existing skills,” the listing adds. “You’ll regularly handle specialist wall coverings, sign-writing, and use specialist paint finishes, such as marbling and gilding.”
As for the prerequisites, the royal team expects the right candidate to have training and education in painting and decorating.
The ideal candidate must also have a “passion for historic buildings” and be up for the “unusual challenges that historic buildings entail.” The person must also be deadline-oriented, organized, and confident in their skills.
