All New U.S. Planes Will Be Required to Have This Safety Feature — What to Know

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is rolling out a new safety measure for airplanes. The FAA will require all new commercial aircraft in the United States to include a secondary physical barrier in front of the cockpit “to ensure the safety of aircraft, flight crew, and air passengers.”

The final rule, which the FAA first proposed last year and approved on Wednesday, will make it more difficult for anyone to access the cockpit if the door to the flight deck is opened during a flight. Pilots open the door if they need to leave the cockpit to use the bathroom, for example.

”Every day, pilots and flight crews transport millions of Americans safely — and today we are taking another important step to make sure they have the physical protections they deserve,” Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure.

“No pilot should have to worry about an intrusion on the flight deck,” David Boulter, the acting FAA Associate Administrator for Safety, said in a statement. (According to the International Air Transport Association, there’s been a spike in reported unruly passenger incidents in 2022 vs. 2021.)

The new rule officially goes into effect in 60 days. But carriers have two years from its effective date, which is expected to be in August, to comply, Reuters reported. Existing planes are not required to be retrofitted.

Jason Ambrosi, the president of the Air Line Pilots Association, called the new rule a “live-saving measure” in a statement.

The security reinforcement comes more than 20 years after the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created following 9/11. The same law that created the agency — and its security screening procedures — also mandated airlines to reinforce cockpit doors, according to the TSA.

This French Fairy-tale Village Is a Down-to-earth Alternative to the Glitzy Riviera — With Sidewalk Cafes and Family-run Vineyards

      PHOTO: JULIANNE EGGERS/GETTY IMAGES

Set in the heart of Provence, the Luberon is the perfect relaxed, lavender-scented antidote to the glitz of the Cote d’Azur. One of the most photogenic spots in the region, Lourmarin exudes a laid-back charm that I instantly fell in love with upon visiting last summer. Because of its location on a plain rather than a hilltop, it’s quite enjoyable to stroll around the cobbled lanes and bop into the boutiques and cafés that occupy restored stone buildings. This heritage-rich Provençale gem also puts on a wonderful weekly market, while its most famous landmark, Château de Lourmarin, hosts music festivals in peak season.

Just outside of town are farmlands, vineyards, French wine hotels, and a spate of other villages to explore. While much of the pleasure of a visit to Lourmarin unfolds simply by wandering around and soaking in the time-worn ambiance, there are a few places I highly recommend hitting on any summer trip to this picturesque town in the South of France.

      Things to Do

Château de Lourmarin shines as the most emblematic attraction. Not only does this Renaissance castle brim with storybook charm, it’s also the place to go for live music in summer. Another seasonal standout, Marché de Lourmarin takes over every Friday. Vendors selling Provençale products — crusty baguettes, creamy cheese, honey, juicy melon, stone fruit, herbs, vegetables, olives, lavender essential oil, and hand-woven baskets — fill the tree-lined promenade and the main square. Because it’s a bit larger than some of the button villages in the area, Lourmarin supplies more artisan shops as well.

I bought a beautiful handmade hat at Panama By Ophelia that made me feel trés chic while galavanting around Provence.

In keeping with its pastoral heritage, agritourism outposts dot the countryside. Framed by grape vines and olive trees, Château Constantin is a family estate with a focus on sustainable growing techniques and organic wine. Oenophiles and casual sippers can tour the 17th-century cellar and swirl terroir-driven red, white, and rosé while admiring the bucolic scenery. Bastide du Laval produces aromatic olive oil. I suggest the self-guided audio tour and free tasting. Truffles are one of Provence’s most prized exports.

Or save up to 35 percent off a stay at one of the Marriott Village properties on Lake Buena Vista near Disney World when they book before May 2.

It allows travelers with access to dozens of other loyalty programs to receive perks like free checked bags and seat selection.

Breeze Airways’ $39 Flight Sale Has Tickets to Los Angeles, Charleston, Fort Myers, and More

      PHOTO: GRANT FAINT/GETTY IMAGES

Low-cost carrier Breeze Airways launched dozens of new and returning nonstop routes this week in time for summer.t

The 37 routes, which criss-cross the country, bring travelers from Florida to Connecticut, from Los Angeles to Rhode Island, from Maine to Charleston, and beyond, the airline shared with Travel + Leisure. And to celebrate, the airline is launching flights starting at just $39 each way.

“The Breeze network is part of the NLCC [Nice Low Cost Carrier] ‘secret sauce,’” Breeze Founder and CEO David Neeleman said in a statement provided to T+L. “Our unique point-to-point structure means we get Guests to their destination in half the time for half the cost.”

The sale, which must be booked by 11:59 p.m. ET on May 26, is valid on travel from May 31 through Nov. 14, excluding travel from June 28 to July 10 and from Sept. 1 through Sept. 4.

Fly between Charleston, SC, and Charleston, WV, starting at just $39 each way, or fly between Richmond, VA, and Cincinnati, OH, on a seasonal route for summer starting at just $49 each way. Customers can also travel between Providence and Richmond on the seasonal summer route starting at just $50 each way, from New York-Islip to Pittsburgh on that seasonal summer route for the same starting price, or between Norfolk, VA, and Syracuse starting at just $54 each way.

The airline also offers deals on cross-country routes with a trip between Los Angeles and Providence starting at just $149 each way.

The low-cost routes are a welcome sight for vacationers since summer travel is expected to be very expensive this year. In fact, international prices overall are up nearly 40 percent compared to last summer and airfare to both Europe and Asia costs as much as it has in five years.

Breeze, which was first created in 2021 by former JetBlue founder Neeleman, has been rapidly expanding in recent months, adding new cities and new routes.

The airline offers travelers the option of three price bundles: “Nice,” “Nicer,” and “Nicest,” which includes the company’s newly-announced Breeze Ascent product. Breeze Ascent allows passengers to bring two checked bags and offers them complimentary snacks and beverages, including alcohol.
