Ford, Vale Indonesia, Huayou sign deal for $4.5 billion EV battery material plant
Ford, Vale Indonesia, and Huayou Cobalt have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a $4.5 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery material plant in Indonesia. The facility will produce key materials used in lithium-ion batteries, which are used to power electric vehicles.
The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of nickel matte, which is a key material used in the production of EV batteries. The nickel matte will be supplied by Vale Indonesia, which is one of the world’s largest producers of the material.
The plant will be located in Indonesia’s Morowali Industrial Park, which is already home to several battery material plants. The location was chosen because of its access to raw materials and its proximity to major shipping routes.
Ford plans to use the batteries produced at the plant in its future electric vehicles. The company has committed to investing $22 billion in electrification through 2025 and plans to launch several new EV models in the coming years.
The project is still subject to regulatory approvals and finalization of commercial agreements. Once approved, construction is expected to begin in early 2022 and the plant is expected to begin operations in 2024. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs in Indonesia and support the country’s efforts to develop a domestic EV industry.
